NGEC to monitor status of PWDs

A partially paralyzed elderly woman from Kiambu County has all reasons to smile after receiving a wheel chair to assist in her mobility. The wheelchair was donated through a joint collaboration of the National Gender and Equality Commission (NGEC), National Council for Persons With Disability (NCPWD) and the Association for the physically Disabled of Kenya (APDK).

86-year old Eunice Wanjiku from Nduiri village in Limuru had been confined to her bed for over a month after she suffered a stroke and fell chest first in open fire sustaining serious burns. She was rescued by her son who heard her distress call.

Peninah Wanjiru, a daughter to Eunice could not hide her joy as she helped her mother onto the wheelchair.

“This is the best gift my mother has received. She is still traumatized but steadily recovering” said Peninah.

Ever since Eunice suffered the stroke, her family has been struggling to fend and take care of her round the clock.

NGEC, NCPWD and APDK pledged to work together in addressing the plight of vulnerable persons including those with disabilities to ensure they access assistive devices as well social support programs.
