BRUTAL MURDER OF 17-YEAR-OLD REFUGEE GIRL IN WAJIR COUNTY

The National Gender and Equality Commission (NGEC) expresses profound outrage and sorrow over the heinous murder of 17-year-old Gaala Aden Abdi, a refugee from Dadaab Refugee Camp. Gaala was forcibly married to a 55-year-old man, subjected to severe abuse, and ultimately killed, with her body burned beyond recognition in Wajir County.

This appalling act represents a flagrant violation of human rights, encompassing child rights, women's rights, and the rights of refugees. As a minor, Gaala was entitled to protection from forced marriage and abuse under Kenyan law and international conventions. As a woman, she had the right to live free from gender-based violence (GBV). As a refugee, she was owed safety and security in her host country.

The Commission is alarmed by the escalating incidents of GBV across the nation, with this tragedy marking the latest in a series of atrocities against women. The Commission calls upon the Government of Kenya to fulfill its duty to protect all individuals within its borders, including refugees, and to uphold its commitments under international human rights and refugee conventions.

We demand a thorough and swift investigation into Gaala's murder, and ensure that those responsible are held accountable to the fullest extent of the law. Furthermore, we urge the government to intensify efforts to prevent GBV, including enforcing laws against forced marriages, providing support services for survivors, and implementing comprehensive awareness campaigns.

The Commission stands in solidarity with all victims of GBV and reaffirms its commitment to advocating for a society where the rights and dignity of every individual are respected and protected.
