Isiolo Kicks Off 16 Days of Activism with Powerful Stand Against Gender- Based Violence
In a vibrant display of solidarity and commitment, the Isiolo Regional Team, in partnership with the Isiolo County Government and key development partners, successfully marked the commencement of the 16 Days of Activism Against Gender-Based Violence (GBV).
The globally recognized campaign, running from November 25th to December 10th, underscores the urgent need to end violence against women, children, and other vulnerable groups.
This year’s event, held at the Isiolo County Stadium, brought together a diverse audience comprising local leaders, civil society organizations, community members, and advocates for gender equality. It was graced by the National Gender and Equality Commission (NGEC) Commissioner Caroline Lentumpuru, who passionately reiterated the importance of collective action in addressing the systemic roots of GBV.
In her keynote address, Commissioner Lentumpuru emphasized, “Ending gender- based violence requires a united front. Every individual, organization, and government institution must play their role in fostering a society where everyone regardless of gender can live free from violence, discrimination,
and fear.”
The Isiolo County Government leadership echoed this sentiment, unveiling a comprehensive plan to bolster GBV response mechanisms. This includes strengthening local referral systems, increasing funding for safe shelters, and enhancing training for law enforcement on survivor-centered approaches.
During the event, survivors shared poignant testimonies, shedding light on the devastating impact of GBV while demonstrating resilience and hope.
Their stories served as a powerful reminder of the importance of breaking the silence around violence and seeking justice for survivors.
Development Partners Step In
Development partners, including international NGOs and local grassroots organizations, showcased their ongoing efforts to combat GBV through programs focused on education, economic empowerment, and mental health support.
Their collaborative initiatives with county authorities have already seen notable successes, such as increased reporting of GBV cases and improved access to support services.
Empowering the Community
Traditional leaders and youth groups also took center stage, highlighting the crucial role of cultural shifts in addressing harmful practices and attitudes. A youth representative urged the crowd to embrace technology and social media as tools for advocacy, saying, “We must use every platform available to amplify the voices of survivors and demand accountability from perpetrators.”
The event concluded with a symbolic march through the streets of Isiolo town, with participants holding banners bearing messages of hope, resilience, and zero tolerance for GBV. The atmosphere was one of determination and unity, reflecting a community ready to confront this pervasive issue head-on.
Sustained Commitment
As the 16 Days of Activism continue, the Isiolo Regional Team and its partners have planned a series of activities, including workshops, legal aid clinics, and media campaigns, aimed at fostering long-term change.
This year’s theme, “Unite! Activism to End Violence Against Women and Girls,” resonates deeply with Isiolo's ongoing efforts to create a safer, more inclusive society.
Commissioner Lentumpuru summed up the spirit of the day with a hopeful message: “This is not just a campaign; it is a movement. Together, we can end gender-based violence and ensure a brighter, equitable future for all.”
A Vision for the Future
Isiolo County’s proactive approach serves as a model for other regions striving to tackle GBV. By fostering partnerships, amplifying survivor voices, and promoting awareness, the county is paving the way for a society where equality and safety are not just aspirations but lived realities.
As the campaign unfolds, the people of Isiolo remain steadfast in their resolve: to stand united against GBV and champion the rights of every individual to live with dignity and respect.
