President Uhuru nominates two Commissioners for NGEC

Two more Commissioners Florence Nyokabi Wachira and Abdillahi Alawy are set to join the National Gender and Equality Commission if parliament approves their names. The development follows their nomination by President Uhuru Kenyatta in a message communicated to parliament Tuesday when the House resumed from recess.

National Assembly Speaker Justin Muturi directed the names of the two be forwarded to the Committee on labour and social welfare chaired by David Were to undertake necessary approval hearings and vetting. The Committee will then submit its report to the House within 21 days. If approved, the president will appoint the two to serve in the Commission for a period of six years.

The Speaker told the Committee to begin its sittings from February 19 and submit its report to the House on or before February 26. The NGEC Act 2011 provides for the composition of the Commission to consist of a chairperson and four other members appointed in accordance with the Constitution and the provisions of the Act.

Currently the Commission consists of the Chairperson Winfred Lichuma and two others; Commissioner Simon Ndubai and Commissioner Gumato Ukur Yatani.
