Press Release -Appointment of Brigadier Fatuma Ahmed

The National Gender and Equality Commission is delighted by the appointment of Fatuma Ahmed as Brigadier in the Kenya Defense Forces by H.E President of the Republic of Kenya Uhuru Kenyatta.

The appointment is a first in all aspects. For the first time in history, Kenya has a woman Brigadier, all rounded, qualified and competent to serve in our disciplined forces.

By appointing Brigadier Fatuma, H.E the President has yet again demonstrated his unwavering commitment to the promotion of gender equality and inclusion of men, women and marginalized groups and communities in the management of our country affairs. We salute the President for his faith in women and the determination to ensure they become part and parcel of key national decision making and development agenda.

We hope to see more similar promotions in the disciplined forces that was for a long time the preserve of the male gender.

We congratulate Brigadier Fatuma Ahmed on her new appointment and wish her well in her new station. We urge other institutions to draw inspiration from Brigadier Fatuma’s appointment and ensure they bring on board women to serve in key decision making organs.
