New Chairperson and Commissioners take oath of office
New Chairperson Dr. Joyce Mutinda has vowed to champion the course of the boy child and other special interests groups as she steers the Commission into another transformative phase. Speaking at the Supreme Court of Kenya shortly after being sworn in, Dr. Mutinda said she would work to reposition the Commission into an effective monitoring institution in ensuring compliance with the principles of equality and inclusion as prescribed by law.
“I fully appreciate the multiplicity of stakeholders involved in the substantive equality agenda and the synergies that need to be harnessed to deliver a just and equitable society. I must thank the secretariat, current and former Commissioners who nurtured the Commission from inception in 2012 to the vibrant institution that it is right now”. Said Dr. Mutinda.
Dr. Muriithi Chomba and Hon. Priscilla Nyokabi were also sworn in as Commissioners. Chief Justice David Maraga urged the newly appointed commissioners to carry out their constitutional responsibilities for the good of the Country. The Chief Justice also noted that the independent commissions are the fourth Arm of government and NGEC needs to fulfill its mandate in line with Article 27 of the Constitution.
Later at a courtesy lunch held at a Nairobi hotel, the Commissioners were joined by members of the Commission on Administrative Justice CAJ led by Chairperson Florence Kajuju, Washington Sati and Lucy Ndungu. Both Commissions pledged to work together to deliver on their complimentary mandates and vowed to resist any attempts at merging the Commissions.
