United Nations Population Fund

UNFPA, the United Nations Population Fund, is an international development agency that promotes the right of every woman, man and child to enjoy a life of health and equal opportunity. UNFPA supports countries in using population data for policies and programmes to reduce poverty and to ensure that every pregnancy is wanted, every birth is safe, every young person is free of HIV/AIDS, and every girl and woman is treated with dignity and respect. UNFPA is guided by the Programme of Action adopted by 179 governments at the International Conference on Population and Development (ICPD) in Cairo in 1994.

At the request of the Government of Kenya, UNFPA has provided support to population policies and programmes since 1974, with the current 7th cycle of support from 2009 to 2013.

While the 7th UNFPA Country Programme of assistance to Kenya is guided by the goals set aside for the implementation of the ICPD Plan of action, UNFPA in Kenya also responds to the Government of Kenya's priorities as identified in the Economic Recovery Strategy for Wealth and Employment Creation, the National Reproductive Health Strategy, the National Population Policy for Sustainable Development, Vision 2030 and other policy documents.

Emerging from lessons learned in previous programmes, UNFPA's 7th Country Programme focuses programme interventions thematically so that resources are made available where needs are greatest. It also aims to create effective coordinating mechanisms and decentralized structures to facilitate programme implementation, forging partnerships to better reflect population issues in national development plans. Finally, it uses flexible modalities such as sector-wide approaches to leverage resources and support programme implementation.
