Past Successes

Key milestones and achievements of the Nakuru Regional Office

Huduma Mashinani is a key outreach initiative through which the NGEC Nakuru Regional Office brings services closer to the people at the grassroots level. Through this platform, the Commission engages directly with communities to raise awareness on gender equality, inclusion, and protection from discrimination, while also receiving and addressing complaints from members of the public. The initiative has enhanced access to justice for vulnerable and marginalized groups, strengthened partnerships with other service providers, and improved public understanding of rights and available support mechanisms. Huduma Mashinani continues to play a vital role in ensuring that no one is left behind in the realization of equality and social justice in Nakuru County.

The NGEC Nakuru Regional Office successfully coordinated the commemoration of International Women's Day 2025 at the National Youth Service Grounds in Subukia, bringing together over 1,000 participants under the theme "For All Women and Girls: Rights, Equality, Empowerment." The event provided a dynamic platform for stakeholders to celebrate the achievements of women and girls while advancing critical discussions on gender equality, leadership, maternal health, and the prevention of gender-based violence. Key highlights included calls for increased representation of women in leadership and decision-making, improved access to maternal healthcare services, and strengthened community action against harmful practices such as FGM and teenage pregnancies. Through collaboration with government agencies, civil society, and community leaders, the commemoration reinforced the importance of inclusive development and reaffirmed NGEC's commitment to promoting equality, protecting rights, and empowering women and girls across Nakuru County.

The NGEC Nakuru Regional Office actively participated in the NOREB Gender Stakeholders Roundtable Meeting, a key regional forum that brought together stakeholders from eight North Rift counties to advance gender equality and inclusion. The engagement provided a strategic platform to assess progress in the implementation of regional gender programmes, share best practices, and strengthen collaboration among state and non-state actors. Key discussions focused on gender mainstreaming, economic empowerment of women, prevention of Gender-Based Violence, and the development of a coordinated Regional Gender Action Plan. The forum also highlighted innovative county initiatives, including rescue centres for GBV survivors, youth empowerment programmes, and policies promoting social protection and inclusion. Through this engagement, NGEC reinforced its role in providing policy guidance, fostering partnerships, and promoting a harmonized approach to advancing gender equality and social justice across the North Rift region.

The NGEC Nakuru Regional Office convened an engagement forum with minority and marginalized communities and duty bearers in Nakuru County to strengthen inclusion and access to government services. The forum provided a critical platform for communities such as the Endorois and Ogiek to directly engage state actors, highlighting key challenges including insecure land tenure, limited access to economic opportunities, underrepresentation in leadership, harmful cultural practices, and human rights violations. Through dialogue and knowledge-sharing, the Commission facilitated awareness on legal frameworks, rights, and available government interventions, while also promoting the National Inclusive Framework for marginalized communities. The engagement reinforced the need for coordinated action, inclusive development planning, and sustained partnerships to ensure that minority and marginalized groups are fully integrated into the county's development agenda.

On 1st October 2025, the National Gender and Equality Commission (NGEC) Nakuru Regional Office hosted Older Members of Society at Kaptembwa Chief's Office in Nakuru West Sub-County to commemorate the International Day of Older Members of Society. Guided by the global theme "Older Members of Society Driving Local and Global Action: Our Aspirations, Our Well-Being and Our Rights," the event provided a vital platform for older members of the community to share their experiences, raise concerns on healthcare, social protection, and property rights, and engage directly with duty bearers. The forum highlighted challenges such as access to medicines under the Social Health Authority, delays in Inua Jamii cash transfers, and cases of disinheritance, while also registering seven formal complaints. NGEC reaffirmed its commitment to advocate for improved services, strengthen collaboration with government institutions, and promote the dignity and rights of Older Members of Society across Nakuru County and beyond.

Contributed to the development of the Nakuru County Disability Act, 2016 and the proposed Nakuru County Persons with Disability (Amendment) Bill, 2024.

Continuous support for counties within the region to develop inclusive County Integrated Development Plans (CIPDs) and Annual Development Plans (ADPs).
