The Commission prioritises the promotion of gender equality and freedom from discrimination of Special Interest Groups

Women

The Commission is advancing women's rights through policy advocacy, monitoring compliance with the two-thirds gender principle, and addressing gender-based violence. It is supporting reforms that enhance women's participation in leadership, employment, and decision-making processes.

Compliance

Ensuring compliance of gender mainstreaming including not more than two-thirds gender principle in all public and private institutions in regards to National laws, regional and International Conventions and Treaties

Addressing Gender-Based Violence

Coordinating prevention, reporting, and response systems for GBV including femicide and online abuse.

Economic Empowerment

Advocating for gender-responsive budgeting, gender-responsive procurement and women's access to economic opportunities.

Leadership & Decision-Making

Promoting women's meaningful participation in political, governance, and community leadership.

Mainstreaming

Mainstreaming issues of gender and women in national and county policies, laws and administrative rules as well as private and public sector institutions

Public Education

Coordinate public education on inclusion of women in government programmes, leadership and development agenda


Children

Children are benefiting from targeted interventions including public education on child rights, monitoring of international commitments, and advocacy on child protection issues. The Commission has played a critical role in addressing child pregnancies and ensuring inclusion of children's rights in national agendas.

Child Participation

Ensuring participation and involvement of children in policies, programs and processes that affect their lives.

International Commitments Monitoring

Tracking Kenya's compliance with UN Conventions, the African Charter and other related conventions of the child.

Child Safety and Care

Driving national strategies to enhance child safety and ensure every child is protected from harm and exploitation.

Child Protection Systems

Strengthening formal and community-based systems that detect, report, and respond to child abuse and exploitation.


Youth

The Commission is empowering youth through policy advocacy, capacity-building programs, and support for employment and entrepreneurship initiatives. It is also promoting youth participation in governance and decision-making processes.

Inclusive Policies and Legislations

Advocating for policies that create and protect opportunities for young Kenyans.

Youth Participation in Governance

Promoting Youth Inclusion and governance in political, legislative, and community structures.

Capacity Building Programs

Facilitate youth focused capacity building and mentorship to build skills for civic engagement.


Persons with Disabilities

The Commission is advocating for inclusive policies, accessible infrastructure, and equal opportunities for persons with disabilities. It has contributed to international frameworks and national policies that strengthen disability rights and inclusion.

Accessible Infrastructure

Auditing access to infrastructure and services to ensure universal design and accessibility standards are met.

Mainstreaming Disability Issues

Mainstreaming disability issues in policies, laws, programs, plans and budgets at national and county levels.

Compliance

Reporting on Kenya's compliance with the UN Convention on the Rights of Persons with Disabilities (CRPD).

Affirmative Action

Ensure PWDs access employment, education, and public services through targeted affirmative action programs.

Public Education

Conducting public education campaigns to promote awareness of disability rights, inclusion, and equal participation in society.


Older Persons

The Commission is addressing the needs of Older Persons through advocacy on social protection, healthcare, and protection from abuse. It is also participating in international forums to influence policy development and strengthen legal frameworks.

Access to Key Services (Health, Water and Care)

Championing accessible and affordable health, water and care services for Older Persons, including mental health and long-term care.

Social Protection

Strengthening legal and policy frameworks for pensions, safety nets, and other social protection for Older Persons.

Elder Abuse Prevention

Advocating for safeguards that offer protection against neglect, exploitation and abuse of Older Persons.

International Forum Participation

Contributing to global platforms on ageing to influence policy development aligned with Kenya's Older Persons' needs.


Minority & Marginalised

The Commission is enhancing the visibility and inclusion of minority and marginalized communities through research, advocacy, and community engagement. It is addressing issues such as land rights, resource access, and representation in governance. NGEC's work contributed to the establishment of the Minority and Marginalised Affairs Unit in the Office of the President.

Mainstreaming Inclusion in Policies and Legal Frameworks

Advise national and county governments on mainstreaming of issues of minorities and marginalized groups in policies, laws and administrative regulations to ensure integration in all public sector operations.

Monitoring and Auditing Affirmative Action Compliance

Monitoring, auditing and advising public and private institutions on the implementation of affirmative action programs focused on minorities and marginalized groups, and ensuring compliance with legal frameworks.

Public Education and Sensitization Campaigns

Conducts public education to raise awareness regarding the rights of minorities and marginalized groups, aimed at enhancing their participation in decision-making and national development.

Access to Key Services and Resources

Promotes access to key opportunities in education, health, infrastructure development, and water access for marginalized communities.

Strengthening Participation in Governance and Leadership

Provide advisory on composition and mainstreaming of minorities and marginalized groups in county governance and administrative structures to increase their representation and involvement in leadership roles.

Through targeted interventions for Special Interest Groups, the Commission is contributing to lasting change across Kenya.
