The Commission has opened discussions with the President’s Special Peace Envoy for the Ateker Region, Hon. John Munyes Kiyong’a, on strengthening cooperation around peacebuilding, equality and protection of communities affected by cross-border insecurity.

The engagement, led by NGEC Chairperson Hon. Rehema Jaldesa, recognised that peacebuilding must include the protection and participation of women, children, youth, persons with disabilities and other marginalised groups.

Communities across the Kenya-Uganda-South Sudan-Ethiopia borderlands face challenges including conflict, cattle rustling, resource-based tensions and displacement, which can have disproportionate effects on women and children.

The proposed collaboration offers an opportunity to strengthen the integration of gender equality and the rights of Special Interest Groups within the Ateker peace and coordination architecture.
