Protecting civic space is essential to ensuring that people can defend rights without fear.

This was among the messages emerging from a Kitui County Conversation Circle convened by the Defenders Coalition, which brought together Human Rights Defenders, county and national government representatives and other duty bearers.

The Commission’s Kitui Regional Office participated in discussions on challenges affecting civic participation, access to justice and the safety of Human Rights Defenders. The engagement also examined protection mechanisms, institutional coordination and referral systems for people whose rights are threatened or violated.

Human Rights Defenders frequently amplify the concerns of survivors of GBV, persons with disabilities, older persons, minority communities and others facing exclusion. Strengthening their operating environment therefore contributes to stronger public accountability and access to justice.
