A team from the National Gender and Equality Commission (NGEC) and JICA visited Machakos Baptist School and Machakos School for the Deaf to assess sexual and gender-based violence prevention and response activities.

The monitoring visit examined how the activities are taking shape in schools. Teachers who had participated in mock training sessions shared what they had learned about preventing and responding to sexual and gender-based violence, and offered recommendations to strengthen the training and its use in the school setting.

The Commission said teachers are often among the first adults learners turn to for help, and need the knowledge and confidence to respond appropriately.

AT THE DEAF SCHOOL

At Machakos School for the Deaf the team observed students taking part in a karate training session. After training, the students join the trainer and a sign language interpreter for discussions that assess their awareness of sexual and gender-based violence and give them space to take part in the conversation.

The Commission said learners must be able to access information, ask questions and take part in discussions in ways that work for them, and that listening to teachers and students will shape prevention efforts that reach every learner.
