NGEC Chairperson Hon. Rehema Jaldesa joined Chief Justice Martha Koome and other women leaders at the launch of Distinguished Women Leaders: Profiles in Courage and Service Leadership in Nation Building, which honours 69 Kenyan women whose leadership has contributed to the country’s democratic, judicial, political and social development.
The Chairperson cited Article 27 of the Constitution as the foundation for equality and non-discrimination and reaffirmed NGEC’s mandate to safeguard that constitutional promise. With the 2027 General Election approaching, she called for political parties to create genuine opportunities for women, youth and persons with disabilities to lead and urged the Independent Electoral and Boundaries Commission to deliver an inclusive electoral framework.
She also addressed the influence of negotiated democracy and patriarchal community structures, calling on elders to use their influence to open opportunities for women rather than restrict them.
The event connected recognition of women’s past contributions with the continuing need to expand opportunities for women in leadership.
