Presiding Archbishop Zack Maina of Rehoboth House of Worship International Ministry paid a courtesy call on the Commission Secretary and Chief Executive Officer, Dr Purity Ngina.
The engagement focused on his work mentoring young boys and supporting male prisoners through guidance, rehabilitation and personal transformation. The need is not marginal.
Many boys and men face social pressure and harmful expectations of masculinity with limited access to positive role models or to any safe space in which to seek support, and the absence of those supports has consequences that are eventually borne by others.
The discussions considered collaboration in promoting responsible masculinity, preventing gender-based violence and strengthening mentorship for boys and for incarcerated men. Rehabilitation
that consists only of serving a sentence achieves little. It should produce accountability, changed behaviour and a workable return to family and community.
Engaging men and boys as partners in advancing gender equality is not a departure from the Commission’s mandate. It is a condition of achieving it. Prevention that addresses only the people harmed
leaves the source of the harm untouched.
Mentoring boys today is an investment in responsible men and safer communities tomorrow.
