The National Gender and Equality Commission (NGEC) has warned of an alarming rise in child trafficking in Maai Mahiu, a transit town along the busy Nairobi–Nakuru highway. At a meeting convened by NGEC’s Nakuru Regional Office, partners from Nakuru Town East and West resolved to petition the county government for urgent action, including accelerated investigations, prosecution of perpetrators, and stronger safeguards for vulnerable children. Civil society and child protection officers described Maai Mahiu as a trafficking hotspot, with organised networks preying on poverty and weak enforcement. NGEC reaffirmed its constitutional mandate to protect children and urged communities to unite in ending the scourge.
